Bessie Marcella Beckham, the early years

Bessie Marcella Beckham was born on May 20, 1886.  She was the oldest child of Green Beckham and Ollie Glenn..

This picture would have been made between 1892 and 1898.  Roy was born in 1892 and Frieda was born in 1898.

1900 census: The family is living in Dawson Township, Phelps County, Missouri. Green's occupation is listed as farmer. Their farm is owned, free of any mortgages. They are living next to William C Beckham and his wife Margaret “ Mazie” Dillon. William is Green's uncle (William C and Henry Beckham (Green's father) are sons of Hardin Leonard Beckham and Zilph Rose)

On this census, Bessie's occupation is listed as doing house work. If it were not for all the correspondence and photo's that Bessie kept, and were preserved first by her sister Hazel, then later, by Susie Rinehart Welch and Edna Rinehart Meyer, this would be all that we would know about Bessie until her marriage to George Harrison Rinehart.

Most of these postcards were sent to Bessie, but there is still of lot information that we can learn about Bessie in these postcards.

This postcard shows that Bessie spent some time at Visitation Convent in 1907.  Another postcard was sent to her at this same address on September 14, 1906. You can find more information about this school here

Stamps from Sapulpa, IT (Indian Territory)

Bessie saved these stamps in one of her books. Oklahoma became a state on November 16, 1907.

Bessie also spent time in Oklahoma visiting her Grandmother and her extended family in Oklahoma .  Several postcards were addressed to her in Mounds and Sapulpa. 

She also has a postcard that was addressed to her in Royal, Missouri, but the card is not postmarked. I did not know where Royal, Missouri was, but I found it on a map. (It is Northeast of Safe).

The Glennpool Oil Strike

Robert Jackson Glenn, son of Jackson Glenn and Elizabeth Branstetter, (1 Jan 1868 in Missouri- 10 Oct 1963 in Cayucos, San Luis Obispo, California) married Ida Estelle Berryhill (4 Jun 1880 in St Joseph, Andrew, Missouri- 18 Aug 1963 in Cayucos, San Luis Obispo, California). Ida Estelle Berryhill is the daughter of Benjamin Franklin Berryhill and Zena Ann Cooper. There seems to be some discrepancy about her birth date. She is listed as being 19 on the Dawes Enrollment card for 1890, her father is listed as Benjamin Franklin Berryhill and her Mother as Zena Berryhill. Her daughters Mabel and Grace are listed and Robert J Glenn is listed as a non citizen. Creek Nation, Broken Arrow, Mounds Post Office.  Robert Jackson Glenn and Ida Estelle Berryhill were married on 9 Aug 1894 in Payne County, Oklahoma. Witnesses were Joseph M. Branstetter & Mark Branstetter.

Dawes Enrollment Card

On November 22, 1905, wildcatters, Robert Galbreath and Frank Chesley (along with, by some accounts, Charles Colcord), drilling for oil on farmland owned by Robert Jackson and Ida E. Berryhill Glenn, created the first oil gusher in what would soon be known as the "Glenn Pool". The discovery set off a boom of growth for the area, bringing in hordes of people: lease buyers, producers, millionaires, laborers, tool suppliers, drunks, swindlers, and news people. Daily production soon exceeded 120,000 barrels (19,000 m³). The nearby city of Tulsa benefited from the production, and Glenpool calls itself the town that made Tulsa famous. The big strike at Glen Pool in 1905—at the time the world’s largest—caused oil prices to plummet world-wide and made the Oklahoma and Indian Territories the center of oil exploration and speculation.

By 1906, a settlement of Glenn, consisting of twelve families had grown up nearby. In that year, the Midland Valley Railroad extended a track from Jenks. By 1907, nearly 3,000 people had moved to the area, but only about 500 people actually lived in the town in 1910. Lots were platted and a post office opened on January 31, 1908. Glenn Family in Mounds, Oklahoma

 Robert Jackson Glenn and Ida Estelle Berryhill left Oklahoma sometime after 1910.  In 1920, they are living in Titusville, Florida.  1930, they are in Fremont, Santa Clara, California and from 1935 until after 1940, they are in Clovis, Fresno, California.

 

Ida Estelle Berryhill died on 18, Aug 1963 in Cayucos, San Luis Obispo, California.
